Qualm, a daily prompt

That nagging doubt,
that qualm
started peripherally.

Just a buzzing, burning twinge
felt in fingers and toes,
over cheeks and scalps.

A simple hesitation.

So we breathe
to settle our nerves.

A sharp inhalation
and those smoky, chokey tendrils
twined chest deep
became unease, disquiet.

A foreboding.

A surety of disaster
just over the next rise,
the barest mile
past the horizon’s grim smile.

So we breathe
to settle our nerves.

Deep into our diaphragm
we suck great gulps
of apprehension, uncertainty
and mistrust.

The stomach becomes
a slow cooker
agitating anxiety,
indecision and reluctance.

So we breathe
to settle our nerves.

At last the brain engages;
a rolling attack
of regret, of remorse,
of conscience.

So we breathe,

and tell ourselves a new story.
